Off topic, but I thought you might enjoy this.
My son has gotten the drum corps bug, and wants to join one. He’s got a lot of work to do, but I think he could manage. I’m not sure how to get him there, though. Have to find the right teacher.

The DCI clubs are incredible the way they take all that teen energy and focus it to amazing effect. It’s intense far beyond what most high school bands can achieve. I wanted to join, but I couldn’t manage the time and travel commitment.
My understanding is that they will take you at whatever level you are and train you to be the musician they need on a bugle. Their main requirement is fanatical effort and devotion.

It’s the fanaticism that I don’t like, but as you say, they turn that into an extraordinary product. I think the dedication is what appeals to my son, since he’s very dedicated to his HS band but not everybody shares that dedication. And it shows on the field.
These corps also take a lot of money. You have to pay for your kid to do it for a summer, and it can be anywhere from $2,000-$5,000. Ouch.

Teens are especially susceptible to fanaticism because of their need to fit in somewhere. I guess at least this is to a somewhat constructive purpose, learning how good it feels to do something exceptional with hard work.
But it’s definitely a rich kid’s activity. That’s a big hurdle.

Some corps are more affordable than others. He’s shooting for somewhere in the middle of the pack, not the top 4 or 5.
